What is LINC?

LINC is an English language training program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)/Government of Canada for adult immigrants and refugees. It is free for students and helps newcomers learn practical, useful English for life in Canada. The classes focus on teaching English needed for settlement in Canada. Some of the themes covered in the classes are:

  • Health
  • Employment
  • Education
  • Community – including transportation and recreation
  • Housing
  • Food and shopping

Who can study in LINC?

To study in LINC a student needs to be:

  • A permanent resident
  • 18 years or older

What do we offer?

At ASSIST, LINC classes are offered virtually, in-person and in blended model at the Southwest location. Our program is flexible and we offer different types and levels of classes.

Students can register for classes anytime and can join a class on the first Monday of every month. They can move to the next level as soon as they have completed the requirements at their level.

Child Care Available

We also offer free child care to students who have children ages between 19 months and 5 years. Child care spaces are limited and priority will be given to students who are studying in a full-time class. The child care rooms are located in the first floor of the building.

Students must bring the following documents for child care registration:

  • Child’s birth certificate
  • Child’s Landing paper or PR card
  • Alberta health care card
  • Immunization record

How to register in LINC?

Step 1: Get a Language Assessment

To study in LINC students must get a language placement score first. Make an appointment at the Language Assessment Referral and Counselling Centre (LARCC) at Catholic Social Services (CSS) for a placement test.

After the test is complete, students will receive a LINC card with a score for Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Step 2: Register for class

Visit the Southwest location (LINC Building – 820 Saddleback Road) for registration :

  • Monday and Wednesday 8:00 am to 8:30 pm,
  • Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm,
  • and Saturdays 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Bring the following documents to register for classes:

  • Picture ID
  • LINC Card
  • PR Card and Landing paper
  • Most recent LINC certificate and progress report if you have been a LINC student before

We will place the student in a class based on the score and seat availability.
